Olympus (TYO:7733) today said it received FDA clearance for its line of airway mobilescopes.

The mobilescopes enable physicians to perform a broad range of upper and lower airway management procedures.

“We are proud to present to the market the only flexible mobilescope models with a video camera on the tip,” Lynn Ray, VP and GM of global respiratory at Olympus, said in a news release. “The lower procedure cost, excellent usability and maneuverability, and outstanding image quality, when compared to other mobilescopes, will mean more options and agility for providers in ensuring excellence in respiratory care.”

Olympus Airway mobilescopes have flexible, portable airway management to perform procedures such as observation of the airway, normal and difficult intubation. The system shows high-resolution images on its LCD monitor to eliminate the need for an additional processor tower or external display.

The airway mobilescopes provide suction and continuous air supply during intubation. Olympus’s MAF-TM2 model can be used for therapeutic procedures in the airway, such as biopsy, aspiration, lavage and transbronchial needle aspiration, without having to connect to endoscopy equipment.

The system also features secure digital card image recording to record still and movie images onto an SD card to allow clinicians to transfer digital images to another device for storage and management.
