OsteoRemedies said today that it initiated the full commercial launch of its Remedy knee spacer with attachable modular stems for connecting the femoral and tibial component.
The Remedy knee spacer is designed for use in a two-stage procedure in the event of permanent prosthesis infection. It is intended for temporary use in 180 days or less and is designed to allow joint mobility while releasing antibiotic into the joint area to protect the implant from bacterial colonization.
The spacer is made up of separate femoral and tibial implants, which are joined together to better fit the anatomy of the patient. A second surgery is required at a later date to remove the Remedy spacer and replace it with a permanent joint implant.
OsteoRemedies adds the Remedy knee spacer to its portfolio of spacer systems used for the hip, knee and shoulder. In November 2018, the company won FDA clearance for its Remedy Spectrum GV hip spacer system and Spectrum GV bone cement.
“After 5 years of clinical experience with the current knee spacer design, our surgeon design team and users clearly identified the need for additional knee stem extensions for use in more complex two-stage revisions for infection,” added chief operating officer Erik Stookey. “By incorporating our proprietary premolded and modular approach to the knee stem design, we can offer surgeons the opportunity to improve OR efficiency vs handmade IM dowels.”
