What is likely the tipping point of “digital” at scale in medtech?

The attempt to boil the ocean of digital may continue to hinder its arrival in a meaningful way in medtech / healthtech.

Perhaps we do it a cup at a time?

Build a middle-market alternative to a large strategic that is a series of acquisitions, and rollups, that prove to be large enough to stand up worldwide distribution and support without losing agility and speed and can address unmet needs.

We have seen this before. It was EV3 in the mid-2000’s that architected a series of emerging endovascular technologies in embolic protection, stroke prevention, carotid stenting, thrombectomy and then went public in 2005.

This time it will be a digitally native organization that…..

–      Has a handful of emerging tech companies that have a substantial data component to them that by themselves are having a challenging time going to market in a way that provides enough momentum to become a stand-alone solution but together corner a market.

–      Focuses on a specific call point. ICU / OR? And digitally dominates it where reality over-rides white papers.

–      Addresses the skilled staffing crisis in the healthcare market.

–      Includes technologies that aggregate useful and available digital data at the call-point addressed. Including but not limited to telehealth and biometric monitoring, addressing problems that are a rinse-and-repeat pure labor play in the healthcare setting without disrupting workflow but instead enhances it.

–      Is led by a series of CEO’s of these current organizations who do not care “who is in charge” and instead are more driven by their mission as evidenced by their passions to date in their respective companies.

The current climate does not set up for the large strategics to acquire and integrate the current leading digital companies in a meaningful way.

It will take a new entity to bring digital to the forefront in a meaningful way and finally stop only “talking digital” at the industry conferences and summits and do something about it.

You can tell me that investors, founders, and public markets will not go for this. Some group will have the courage, insight and yes, desperation to exist, that will pull this off and it will be the event that will be the seminal moment in the true digital transition in our industry.

Who is up for this?
