Stryker launches nailing system to treat foot conditions

Stryker (NYSE:SYK) announed today that it has launched its T2 ICF intramedullary nailing system.
The new system is meant to help people suffering from serious foot conditions including Charcot foot, which can arise among poeple with diabetes and cause poor bone quality and potential nerve damage and foot ulcers.
Stryker describes the T2 ICF system as a stable product designed to prevent nail back out and promote fixation and accuracy. Stryker officials hope the new system will reduce leg amputations resulting from diabetic foot ulcers.
“We are always looking for ways to improve fixation strategies in Charcot patients, as they tend to have poor bone quality and often end up needing limb-salvage procedures,” said Dr. Vinod Panchbhavi, professor and chief of ankle and foot surgery at UTMB Health.
“The T2 ICF nails are lightweight and sturdy, and easy to use,” Panchbhavi said in a news release.
The medial and lateral column nail provides rigid fixation with the ability to apply up to 10 mm of compression through the nail, according to Dr. William Simon,  a podiatrist at Bayview Physicians Group and designer of the T2 ICF nail. “The stable nail is designed to be compatible with cross screws to help prevent nail back-out, and the large nail diameters are intended to help prevent nail breakage.”
It’s also possible to use the T2 ICF ontramedullary nailing system to treat other conditions including fracture fixation, osteotomies, non- and mal-unions, and fusions.
