Corindus wins FDA clearance for robotic surgery automation tech

Corindus Vascular Robotics announced today that it launched a new set of automated robotic movements in its technIQ series for the CorPath GRX.

Waltham, Mass.-based Corindus received FDA 510(k) clearance for a new software automation designed to provide predictable and consistent movements for advanced device manipulation during complex coronary peripheral procedures, according to a news release.

The Siemens Healthineers subsidiary said Dr. Jean Fajadet of the Clinique Pasteur in Toulouse, France, performed the first-in-human coronary procedures with the new automated movements, which replicate manual techniques used by highly skilled interventionalists.

Corindus’ four newly launched automated movements give the technIQ series the ability to aid in complex tasks such as crossing lesions, navigating tortuosity and measuring the anatomy for appropriate device size selection.

“This new software algorithm gives the operator new possibilities to advance and facilitate treatment, especially with complex lesions,” Dr. Fajadet said in the release. “I am pleased with the success of using the automated moves and am honored to play a role in the advancement of robotic technology that will make interventional procedures more efficient and safer for our patients.”

“The new technIQ movements mark the next phase in the evolution of robotic-assisted intervention and a vital step toward the advancement of our technology,” added Corindus executive VP Wayne Markowitz. “Automating more movements used in cardiovascular intervention will allow physicians to focus their attention on overall case strategy while equipping them with advanced techniques for navigating the vasculature.”
