Alcon launches Vivity intraocular lens in Europe

Alcon (NYSE:ALC) today said it launched its Vivity intraocular lens in Europe.
The Vivity lens is a non-diffractive lens that reduces a cataract patient’s dependency on glasses. It is available in spherical and topic designs and allows for high-quality vision at far and intermediate ranges, according to the company.
“We are excited to introduce Vivity because it addresses some common concerns of surgeons and cataract patients alike when considering presbyopia-correcting IOLs (PC-IOLs),” president of global business and innovation Michael Onuscheck said in a news release. “This novel non-diffractive lens option provides PC-IOL performance with the ease of monodical patient management.”
The company’s non-diffractive technology uses two smooth surface transition elements on the anterooms surface of the lens that work together to create a continuous, extended range of vision. In clinical trials, the Vivity was shown to provide “very good quality of vision” at distance and intermediate ranges in bright and dim light, according to Alcon. Without wearing glasses, 94% of patients reported good or very good vision at distance and 92% had a good or very good vision at arm’s length. People using the Vivity intraocular lens also reported experiencing low levels of starbursts, halos and glares.
Alcon will launch Vivity with select U.S. ophthalmologists in the next few months with more availability announced later in the year.
“As we continue to focus on the ongoing launch of the PanOptix in the U.S., we look forward to launching Vivity as a complementary lens in more markets throughout the year,” Onuscheck said.
