Apple (NSDQ:AAPL) is engaging in a company-wide effort in which its product designers, engineering, operations, packaging teams, and suppliers are designing and producing face shields for healthcare workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic, CEO Tim Cook recently announced.
Apple received positive feedback after the first shipment of face shields arrived at Kaiser Permanente facilities in the Santa Clara Valley over the past week, Cook said in a video shared on Twitter on April 5. The company plans to ship over 1 million face shields by the end of the week and keep shipping over 1 million a week going forward. The distribution will quickly expand outside the U.S.
“These pack flat — 100 per box,” Cook said. “Each shield is assembled in less than 2 minutes and is fully adjustable. We’re sourcing materials and manufacturing in the U.S. and China.” Cook said Apple has also been able to source 20 million masks through its supply chain, with media reports describing that masks as the N95 respirators most needed by health providers. “Our focus is on unique ways Apple can help, meeting essential needs of caregivers urgently and at a scale the circumstances require,” Cooke said. “For Apple, this is a labor of love and gratitude.”
