Canary Medical announced today that it introduced its first orthopedic analytic module: Canary Quantiles recovery curves.

Recovery curves utilize movement data measured by Canary Medical’s proprietary implantable Canturio TE tibial extension sensor technology. The sensor technology enables Zimmer Biomet’s Persona IQ smart knee implant.

Persona IQ with the Canturio TE tibial extension sensor technology collects activity measures and gait parameters for at least 10 years. By pooling parameters across the Persona IQ patient population, recovery curves provide population data for activity levels and knee kinematics. It also ranks each patient’s knee performance against peers. The technology does so based on age, group, gender and time since surgery, according to a news release.

Canary Medical said clinicians may now access and use the information to determine whether to augment in-office patient examinations. They can also update their care plans over the course of the year following surgery.

The company said its technology represents the first and only monitoring tool available to reproducibly characterize a total knee replacement recovery versus objective aggregate population data obtained from identical implantable sensors.

‘The next step’ for Canary Medical and Zimmer Biomet

In August, 2021, Canary and Zimmer announced that the FDA granted de novo classification for Persona IQ. Earlier that year, Canary Medical CEO Dr. Bill Hunter described the highly anticipated technology to MassDevice and Medical Design & Outsourcing.

The two companies partnered because of a shared belief that smart knee implants could be the next big thing. Today’s announcement represents progress for that shared vision.

“Today, Canary Medical and Zimmer Biomet take the next step in our shared vision of changing the future of orthopedic post-operative care. Canary Quantiles Recovery Curves are another exciting example of our commitment to providing meaningful data and analysis to surgeons and their patients,” Hunter said in today’s news release. “Improvements in implanted sensors, power and transmission technologies enable more precise measurement and meaningful continuous monitoring to better understand and support patient post-operative care. We will soon expand the use of our implantable Canturio technology to other joints and implants, making Persona IQ the first of many Zimmer Biomet products that will benefit from the data our sensors provide.”

More on the technology

Persona IQ collects data passively via the Canturio TE extension sensor technology. It does so every day from the same anatomic location without charging or replacement.

Canary now offers its recovery curves to all surgeons implanting Persona IQ from the dashboard in their Canary Medical account. The company said it enhances the information displayed on the MyMobility dashboard. It plans to offer access for free for a limited time as it continues to expand its platform.

Future releases for Canary’s modules include streamlined office workflow through alerts for patients out of defined recovery parameters. The company intends to make its information useful for remote patient monitoring.

“We continue to be excited about utilizing objective patient data to support and personalize care pre-, intra- and post-operatively with Persona IQ,” said Liane Teplitsky, president of global robotics and technology and data solutions at Zimmer Biomet. “We are working together with Canary to introduce recovery curves to customers in order to better understand how this novel information is being used and displayed prior to full integration with Zimmer Biomet’s MyMobility with Apple Watch platform, the primary user interface for Persona IQ data.”
