Varian Medical (NYSE:VAR) today said the U.S. Trade Representative granted exclusion of its radiotherapy system components from China in the latest tariffs.
Palo Alto, Calif.-based Varian said components sourced from China for its linear accelerators manufactured in the U.S. were granted exemption from Section 301 of the tariffs. The exemption took place on Sept. 20.
“We are thankful for the USTR and U.S. government’s continued recognition of the positive impact of Varian treatment technology in the fight against cancer by granting a tariff exclusion to these components,” president and CEO Dow Wilson said in a news release. “The supply of components without disruption plays an important role in our system manufacturing process so we can continue delivering cancer-fighting technology and honor our commitment to creating a world without fear of cancer.”
Earlier this month, China added medical linear accelerators to a list of 16 products that were exempted from its trade war with the U.S. China’s exemptions are retroactive to August 23, 2018, meaning Varian is due for refunds on any tariff increases they’ve paid since that date.
